If you're a regular or long time visitor here to grantalias, you're probably thinking with the regularity of posts I'm either dead or living in a cave. Neither of which is true but sure feels like it sometime. As you can see in the photo below we are kept very busy by our growing family.
I am also desperately waiting for the release of Windows 7 so I can buy a Dell I have my eyes on and get back to editing the family videos (and subsequent posting of said video). As I do not have the time to take my production machine off-line and do a clean install to freshen it up; and after 3.5 years it needs it big time.
Here are the stats of the Dell I'm looking at.
- Intel® Core™ i7-920 Processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz)
- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz
- 1TB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cach
- ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB
The service I use (and many others around VOX) to post their tweets to their blog is back up. Loudtwitter is a great tool to automatically post my tweets here in a hidden post and then every couple of days I can go back and delete the junk and (hopefully) flesh out the gems with photos and video.
My real problem is that SixApart has let VOX languish in a time capsule these past three years. When I look at the other social community web services like Twitter and Facebook and how they interconnect with my digital life, VOX pales in comparison.
Okay I know this is old news, but I just never got around to putting my two cents in on the subject.
Maybe we will see some innovation here on our beloved VOX .When VOX launched, it's feature set was pretty good and better than anything else I had found. Unfortunatley, it's getting long in the tooth two years on.
- You can still only import video from YouTube (where is the support for all the other video sites?). Yes you can embed them but it is not as elegant. Plus it doesn't show up in your video libaray.
- There hasn't been any update to the upload tool for mulitpul photos, but to be fair it does do the job adaqually.
- Still waiting for a native application for the iPhone. I would certainly blog more if there was one. I'd even gladly pay for such an application.
- Though I haven't seen it in a while, the dreaded white screen of nothing was pretty prevelent here on VOX in the past.
- I really look forward to the [this is good] sections but sometimes there are really slow in updating.
I'd recommend adding the editors to your neighborhood. News & Politics, Music, Life, Entertainment, Culture & Technology. When you find interesting stuff hit the share button (that's on every post) and send on to one of the editors.
I'm really hoping that the former Pownce team is the influx of new blood that VOX needs to get me excited about posting here again. Also if they could make it as easy as posting to Pownce or Twitter I would certainly post more, way more.
Thanks to tools like StatCounter and Google Analytics I'm able to see what the traffic has been like over the past year here at Grantalias.
Since the crazy traffic spike from last year it's been pretty quite around the old blog. Though it has been consistent numbers.
Unfortunately all the top visited posts are from 2007.
That a side, I did make the explore page three times for the following posts! That was pretty exciting!
That's right, it's been another year here on VOX! I joined December 2nd and my first post was on the 3rd.
I might not have posted as much as I did during the previous year and that was on purpose. There was a concerted effort here at grantalias to post more hands on experiences and less thrid party news. At the very least to put my own view on the subject and I think I succeeded.
In the vein of last year's Voxiversary there will be a couple of days of celebrations here at grantalias, that is if I don't fall asleep at night.
Here's a run down of a few netiquette's everyone should be following. But mostly they are behaviors that I continually run up against out here.
Your Work Email As Your Only Email
Really you're going to do that? Seriously? In 2008? If you were unaware, there are excellent web based email clients that are free (Live Mail, Gmail & Yahoo Mail).
Attaching Photos to Email
Just because broadband is near ubiquitous in use, that doesn't mean you should use it irresponsibly and fill inboxes with megabytes of photos. There are far more efficient ways to share your photos.
Facebook
You might find it strange that I have a whole section dedicated to Facebook, but to me that's just an indicator of the impact it's had in the social network sector and it hasn't been all good. It's brought people who would never have the inclination, time or willingness to update a blog or post their status on services like twitter. Due to this influx of norms there are a few things I have to get off my chest.
- Tagging kids as parents. If you have photos of my kids it's usually because I was there at the event as well. So it's safe to say that I'll see the photos of said event and you won't need to tag them as me.
- The incessant noise over the new Facebook redesign. You know ten years ago when you were watching Friends and Seinfeld? Well guess what, I was on the internet. Do you know how many site redesigns I've seen in the past decade? Alot and I'm still alive. I don't know where this entitlement people feel that have over a free service that could charge money for their now indispensable site. Anyone remember Classmates.com? No one wants to pay for this service myself included. You'll get through this, don't worry. It could be worse you could pay $30 a year to contact anyone.
- If you invite me to an event on Facebook and then send out a mass email inviting me to the same event, I'm just going to assume that you have no idea who's in your address book (myself included) and will consider it spam. Sorry.
Of course I'm not onesided on this. What are some netiquette's that you follow or wish others did? I'd love to hear them.
Since I've joined VOX I've always wondered how popular or well know it has become. A few friends of mine have found VOX (independent of me), but a real (unfortunate) indication of how popular a service has become is the amount of spam you receive on it. Let's just say that FaceBook is really popular.
So VOX must be gaining tracktion as I recevied my first piece of spam from AdultspaceGiftsBot . Thankfully it looks like VOX dropped it's Six Apart shaped hammer on the account and it's no longer active.
Unfortunately, still no compose page. I hope for the iPhone App Store launch on July 11th and a VOX app from Six Apart.
At long last Six Apart has brougth fourth a web application for the iPhone / iPod Touch crowd like myself. It's called Blog It and I'm using it right now to write this post.
But it's not just for VOX my favorite blogging platform. It will work with Twitter, Pownce, Facebook and other six Apart blogging offerings to name a few. So you can update your online presence everywhere at once with one post.
I can't tell you how I've waited for something like Blog It to come along from Six Apart. Now if only I could add comments and replies to posts on my Touch.
Of course I can't wait to see the Typepad application that will be free from the iPhone application store when the 3G iPhone goes on sale July 11th.
So this Blog It web application has till then to impress me.
Update: I added the following on my computer since Blog It does not have an edit, or a save as draft features.
And Apple get some damn cut and paste going.
In past weeks I have been friended, added or followed by people / companies on the usual social networking platforms. I don't have any examples from Facebook since they already have all my personal information and can serve up highly targeted adds. I don't know if that's better or worse.
But one would think that as the popularity of these social networking services like Pownce, Twitter and VOX push them into mainstream adoption companies will follow the masses to push their brand and win our hearts and minds. Oh and our pocket books.
Hopefully this is just a first step in VOX developing an application for the iPod/iPhone. Back in March Six Apart
's CEO Chris Alden stated that Typepad would be developing an application using the newly released Apple SDK.Hopefly this signals that iPod/iPhones users will be able to use VOX on the go. At the very least my home screen now looks much better.
