Be sure to check out the titles that are available because they certainly run the gamut from Archie and Disney titles to Dan Dare from Gath Ennis of Preacher fame. While supplies last of course.
Whether this is your excuse to fall off the wagon again and get back on that sweet sweet nectar juice we call comic collecting or like myself it's your quarterly excuse to pick up your reserve box (because you never got off the nectar juice), have a great Free Comic Book Day 2008!
Check out a local comic store near you and don't forget to bag and board responsibly.
Hopefully we can get to my comic shop early and snag some Owly or maybe a Transformers Animated comic for the boys and I can pick-up my reserves for the last couple of months.
I know I will be when the film comes out March (2009).
Watchmen is important because is changed how superheros were thought of. They were no longer perfect moral compasses for the rest of society to follow. They would kill and be killed, were flawed and brutally realistic. That people and governments would outlaw heroes was a foreign idea before Watchmen.
To the non-comic reading people out there, you really should go see Watchmen. In fact you've already seen stuff that owes it's existence to this Alan Moore series.
Heroes the television series owes a lot to Watchmen if not in tone and characterization but also plot. Even Pixar's The Incredibles with it's kid friendly story was influenced by Watchmen. And if you're interested there are countless comic series such as Kingdom Come and Powers you should read.
In the meantime check out the Watchmen production blog for updates.
Shamelessly copied from grrrace's great reviews, you should read them.
.:What I'm Watching:.
Hitman: Unrated. [A gun-for-hire "Hitman" is a genetically-engineered, elite assassin known only as Agent 47 hired by a group known only as 'The Organization' is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Eastern Europe. But even 47 couldn't anticipate a "random equation" in his life exactitude: the unexpected stirrings of his conscience and the unfamiliar emotions aroused in him by a mysterious Russian woman.]
Originally I was looking at this for the Digital Copy that's included but what a great surprise this film was. Based off the video games series, it's about a trained assassin who's double crossed. This guy makes the last James Bond look like a traffic cop. Great acting, what a believable character, when is Hitman 2 coming out. Some of it is very violent and graphic but in all fairness the film is called Hitman. Some of the best fighting scenes I can remember. By the way both Donna and I watched the film entirly on the iPod Touch in bed that's how good the film was.
Tekkonkinkreet: [Two orphan brothers the tough, canny Kuro and the childish, snot-nosed Shiro who live in the streets of Treasure City. Together they are known as Neko and they live homeless, living out of a car in the junkyard when not visiting Gramps, an older homeless man, these children also serve as the city's superhero guardians, although older brother Black must also give a great deal of personal attention to White, who even for a ten-year-old can sometimes seem very disconnected from reality. They're going to have to be on the top of their games, because a pair of Yakuza - Rat and Kimura - are returning to Treasure Town, but to a certain extent their only front men for a group of developers looking to build a family amusement center - and they've hired the monstrous looking Snake and his inhumanly powerful goons to make sure it gets done.]
I know you'll be tempted... not for kids. A R rating in the video and a 13+ sticker from the Régie du Cinema, but adults who like tragic, flawed and damaged characters will like it. Also lots of Matrixesque type violence and movement, but it is the same studio that worked on the Animatrix. The animation is top notch but didn't blow me away like a Miyazaki film, and yes I know that is a very high standard. I liked how whether street kid, criminal or cop they all cared about their neighborhood and in strange way were a kind of family. For me it added depth to the characters and story.
.:What I'm Reading:.
I really enjoy Richard Morgan. Broken Angels is fast paced but not rushed, has characters that you end up caring about, and is a great continuation of the Cyberpunk genre (which I love). I like when I see the future, science and space travel and of couse people done realistically, no Lycra jumpsuits here. It's gritty, dark and life is cheap since you'll just get a new body after you die anyway. Excellent book. Really pushed my imagination.
.:What I'm Listening Too:.
Supergrass - Diamond Hoo Ha: I've always liked Supergrass right from their first album way back in High School. They really do the retro 70's & 80's pop rock just how I like it. Catchy tunes, memorable lyrics and musically layered songs. Ghost of a Friend is a favorite. Though Carts and I differ in opinion if he's the only one who's allowed to head bob along in the car to the album. Oh and it's iTunes Plus so no DRM. And he's a preview MP3 of the entire album.
I couldn't help myself after listening to Buzz Out Loud Episode 688. This is totally rushed and just for comedic effect so forget how bad it looks and enjoy. Or I'll through you out the nearest airlock, gods help me.
We all have had a moment like this with a friend or family member when it comes to our beloved Battlestar but since I haven't yet started recording all my conversations Jason will be held up as an example for us all to see.
Downside? South Park Studios is geolocked to the good old US of A only.
Bad enough they had to invade us in the movie, but now this. Though the site does seem to suggest that it's "coming soon". Oh well, par for the course.
Upside? The other 6 billion of us can at least use the Avatar Creator. Though the Simpsons avatar creator is much better than the South Park one.
So to everyone who bought a HD DVD player and started building a catalog, congratulations you are the proud owner of 2008's betamax.
Engadget also has a post covering the end of the format war.
I am so glad right now that I never had the money to get into the format war to start with. Now let's see how long before Blu-Ray becomes obsolete and is superseded by a new format? 5 years? 10 years?
c|net's download.com has this track as a free un-DRMed mp3, or you could always buy it on iTunes for 99¢ un-DRMed AAC file.
According to Wikipedia they will have a full length album in April. But if you can't wait you can always pick up their Grammy winning EP The Distant Future in the mean time.
I should really start watching the HBO show.
That is why I was blow away like Alderan (sorry) when I caught sight of Han and Chewbacca on a bottom shelf.
I've never heard of Mighty Muggs before so please excuse me if I'm the last one. These things are totally cute. If cuteness powered the Millennium Falcon it certainly could do the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs (even if parsecs is a unit of distance and not speed).
Not to say that I don't like Aerosmith they're fine and all, but on the other hand I don't own a single Aerosmith record, 8 track, audio tape, mini disc or CD of the prolific rock band. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that is thankful to the band for giving me Alicia Silverstone during my adolescence.
Nintendo Wii Fanboy seems to feel the same way, about the game, not Alicia Silverston. I'm sure there will be other guitar heroes out there that will surely feel the same way.
I know that Guitar Hero is popular and good luck finding one in stores, but is the user base large enough to support a game riding one bands catalogue even if it does span almost 40 years? Of course if this was say a Beatles exclusive game I don't think we'd be having this conversation.
UPDATE: I might have rushed to judgment on this game. See what a friend of mine said, makes sense.
Thanks for the info... and I for one, having grown up on mostly Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, am happy to hear about the upcoming game :D I actually have said that Walk This Way would be a good song for GH.
Really, when you think of it, what other band CAN they base a whole game around? It would have to be obviously a band that is really really popular, has a huge catalogue to pick from and obviously is guitar-driven. MAYBE Rolling Stones, but the youngens would be like... Rolling who? ACDC might work too, but a lot of their songs are basically the same. So ya... Aerosmith works for me.
